Talk for Writing

Intent: Talk for Writing enables children to internalise the language of story so that they can imitate it, innovate on it and create their own effective stories independently. Talk for Writing is a programme which encourages children to talk with stories as the main focus. The programme was developed by Pie Corbett. It’s a fun and creative way of developing future readers and writers. It develops a range of vocabulary, story structures, story making and a love of stories.

Implementation: Our Literacy & Story Group plans are generally planned using Talk for Writing principles. We ensure that all children spending a year in our nursery class will know at least six stories using this in-depth and comprehensive approach. We use the Three Stage method; Imitation, Innovation and Invention. Imitation – the children learn to tell the story by heart using simple story maps, actions and props. The staff team may act out the story there will be a range of planned activities extending the story e.g. visits & outings, making props, acting out etc. There is a focus on children using story language such as Once Upon a Time, Next and Finally; Four Leaf Clover My Story is Over. Innovation Stage – Children are supported to make up their own versions of wellknown stories using props and visuals. Invention Stage – Children independently make up their own stories using props, natural materials, small world and role play opportunities.

Impact: Our Progress data for children in Communication, language and literacy is consistently very strong, year on year. We are proud to send our children to school with a good grasp of language and literacy skills which will ensure they are successful readers and writers in the future.
