Our Sensory Room

We have a self-contained sensory room and several sensory spaces/areas throughout the Nursery School and Children’s Centre.

The sensory room is a quiet space dedicated to stimulating, developing and relaxing the senses. The teams working with children have carefully designed and planned the décor and resources to meet the needs of the children here at Woodlands. The flexible space and adaptable resources ensure that we can continue to meet the needs of children in different cohorts.

The room includes low lighting, adjustable lighting projections, fibre optics, mirrors and a bubble tube. It also contains a choice of comfortable places to sit, a variety of interesting objects to explore, and features soft music.

Our sensory room provides:

  • A space for all children to enjoy and explore. Children will be offered the opportunity to develop and engage their senses whilst interacting with a range of sensory experiences which will support their holistic development.
  • A therapeutic environment for children with autism and other special educational needs
  • Sensory equipment that can be used to develop a range of physical skills, including improving coordination and motor control.
  • A calming space for all children but especially for those experiencing emotional or behaviour difficulties or requiring quieter spaces to help them to regulate their emotions. The sensory spaces promote mental and physical relaxation.
  • A safe space for children to develop their communication and social skills, in a calm and supportive environment.

A space which encourages increased concentration, focus and attention; promoting cognitive development by supporting brain function. Children will be able to learn about and develop an understanding of cause and effect and develop their creativity and innovation.

We all have different learning styles; some might understand new information better if they can absorb it visually, while others might require a more hands-on approach (tactile learning). Because of its multi-sensory approach, our sensory room is able to cater for all of these individual learning styles, providing an education and support that is tailored to our pupils’ needs.
